Wayanad has no railway station. The nearest major railway station is Kozhikode (Calicut, code CLT) - 65-70 km from Kalpetta, 50 km from Vythiri. From Kozhikode station, KSRTC buses run every 30 min to Kalpetta (2.5-3 hrs, ₹120-180) or take a taxi (₹2,200-2,800).

From the Bangalore / Mysore side, use Mysuru station (MYS) - 140 km / 3.5-4 hours via Gundlupet forest and Sulthan Bathery. KSRTC Airavat buses connect Mysuru to Sulthan Bathery and Kalpetta.

From Bangalore

Drive via Mysuru - Gundlupet - Sulthan Bathery - Kalpetta. The road is excellent for the first 200 km, then becomes a scenic forest drive. Budget 6-7 hours. Overnight KSRTC buses from Bangalore reach Kalpetta in 8-9 hours.

From Kozhikode (Calicut)

The shortest route, via the Thamarassery Ghat road. It is a winding mountain climb - allow 2.5-3 hours and take it easy around the hairpin bends. This road enters Wayanad through Vythiri.

From Kochi (Cochin)

Drive via Thrissur and Kozhikode, then up the Thamarassery Ghat. Around 200-210 km and 5-6 hours. Alternatively, take a direct KSRTC bus from Kochi to Kalpetta.

From Mysuru

A lovely 140-150 km drive via Gundlupet, Bandipur forest area and Sulthan Bathery. Watch for wildlife on the road in the forest stretch - drive slowly in the early morning and evening.

From Ooty, Salem, Madurai, Palakkad & Thekkady (Tamil Nadu / South Kerala side)

Ooty to Wayanad (110-120 km, 3.5-4 hrs): via Gudalur - Sulthan Bathery. The most popular combo trip. Salem to Wayanad (230 km, 5.5-6 hrs): via Mysuru - Gundlupet. Madurai to Wayanad (360 km, 8-9 hrs): via Palakkad - Kozhikode - Thamarassery. Palakkad to Wayanad (210 km, 5-5.5 hrs): via Perinthalmanna.
