How to reach Wayanad by train from your city:
Drive via Mysuru - Gundlupet - Sulthan Bathery - Kalpetta. The road is excellent for the first 200 km, then becomes a scenic forest drive. Budget 6-7 hours. Overnight KSRTC buses from Bangalore reach Kalpetta in 8-9 hours.
The shortest route, via the Thamarassery Ghat road. It is a winding mountain climb - allow 2.5-3 hours and take it easy around the hairpin bends. This road enters Wayanad through Vythiri.
Drive via Thrissur and Kozhikode, then up the Thamarassery Ghat. Around 200-210 km and 5-6 hours. Alternatively, take a direct KSRTC bus from Kochi to Kalpetta.
A lovely 140-150 km drive via Gundlupet, Bandipur forest area and Sulthan Bathery. Watch for wildlife on the road in the forest stretch - drive slowly in the early morning and evening.
